Returning to St. Petersburg from a Swiss sanatorium, the gentle and naive epileptic Prince Myshkin – known as “the idiot” – visits his distant relative General Epanchin and continues to charm the general and his family. But his life is filled with turmoil when he accidentally sees a photograph of the beautiful Nastasya Filippovna. Completely taken by her, he soon finds himself caught in a love triangle and drawn into a web of blackmail, betrayal and, ultimately, murder. In the character of Prince Myshkin, Dostoevsky portrays the purity of a “truly beautiful soul” and explores the dangers that innocence and goodness face in a corrupt world.
