The Phantom of the Opera is both a detective story and a dark romantic melodrama, inspired by Leroux's passion and obsession with the Paris Opera. He was fascinated by the Opera, which was considered the architectural marvel of the 19th century, and with all its grandeur and functionality at the time represented a small independent city. During his visits to the Opera, Leroux heard many times the legend of a bizarre character, according to many a ghost or phantom, who secretly lived in the labyrinths of the Opera's basements, and who allegedly organized several terrible accidents in the theater. The stories whetted Leroux's journalistic appetite, who embarked on more thorough research, and later decided to turn his discoveries into a novel. One of the most impressive aspects of this novel is the character Eric, the phantom himself. He is a man who despises and pities himself at the same time.
